A garage cleanout goes faster when you sort before you start hauling: keep, donate, recycle and dispose. Work one wall at a time, get everything out onto the driveway so you can see it, then request an estimate for the pile that is leaving. Volume varies a lot depending on how full the space is, so send photos and we can estimate it before arrival.
Sort before you start hauling
The mistake that turns a one-day garage cleanout into a three-weekend project is moving things around instead of deciding about them. Before anything leaves the garage, give every item one of four destinations: keep, donate, recycle, dispose.
Do it out loud and quickly. If you cannot remember owning something, it goes.
Get it out where you can see it
Pull everything onto the driveway. A garage looks manageable while things are still stacked against the walls; it stops looking manageable when it is spread out, and that is exactly the point. You cannot sort what you cannot see.
Work one wall at a time so the driveway never becomes its own problem.
Deal with the four piles differently
Keep
Put these back last, and put them back on shelves rather than the floor. Floor storage is how garages fill up again.
Donate
Working tools, sports equipment, furniture in usable condition and unopened supplies are all candidates. We route usable items to local donation organizations when they are accepted, so they can go out with the rest of the load rather than needing a separate trip.
Recycle
Metal, cardboard and electronics are separated where practical rather than going straight to disposal.
Dispose
Broken furniture, damaged storage bins, old carpet and general debris. This is the pile we are for.
Set the chemicals aside
Almost every garage has a shelf of paint cans, solvents, motor oil, pesticides or an old propane tank. We cannot transport any of these. They need a household hazardous waste drop-off. Pull them out early and keep them separate so they are not sitting in the middle of the pile on pickup day.
How much space will it take?
Garage cleanout volume varies a lot depending on how full the space is and what needs to go. A lightly cluttered garage may be a partial load, while a packed garage can take a full load or more. Send photos and we can estimate the volume before arrival. Our load size guide and pricing shows what each size holds.
You do not have to guess. Send photos of the garage and we will size it for you.
Book the pickup for the end, not the beginning
Sort first, then book. If the trailer arrives while you are still deciding, you will either rush the decisions or pay for space you did not fill. See Garage & Basement Cleanouts for how the job runs, and get a free estimate once your pile is ready.
We serve Charlotte and the surrounding communities including Huntersville, Matthews and Concord.
